DNA tests confirm body is missing 3-year-old girl

DNA tests have confirmed that a body found in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province is that of a three-year-old girl who disappeared last week, police said yesterday.

Jiang Yumeng vanished from a park in Longwan District of Wenzhou on August 11.    Her body was found 2 kilometers away on Saturday.

A 28-year-old man, a native of neighboring Jiangxi Province, was held on Sunday in connection with the death, Wenzhou police said.

Police say he is a married man with no children. The suspect abducted Jiang from Zhuangyuan Cultural Park when her grandmother left her there and went to get the child a drink.

Surveillance camera footage showed Jiang’s grandmother left at 7:47pm. A man in white on a bike then approached the child and they disappeared two minutes later.

According to police, the little girl cried for help and struggled in a bid to escape.

Afraid of being discovered, the man covered her mouth and suffocated her, reported the Wenzhou Evening News.

Police dismissed online rumors that the little girl’s face had been sprayed with sulfuric acid and her internal organs removed.

Exposure to the sun and bites from scavenging animals may have given the body this appearance, said officers.

Jiang’s parentshad asked relatives in Wenzhou to join in the search.

Weibo users also posted a photograph of the little girl to publicize her disappearance.

Jiang’s distraught grandmother is reported to have attempted suicide afterwards.

The case is still under investigation, police said.
