Dad urges new probe into son's cell death

THE father of a suspect who allegedly committed suicide in an interrogation room in Yunnan Province demanded a new investigation after police said his son unlocked his handcuffs using paper money and used shoelaces to hang himself.

Police in Kunming City said Xing Kun managed to open his manacles with a one-yuan bill, find the room's blind spot from security cameras and hang himself with a 175cm-long shoe lace just 4mm thick.

The explanation provoked outrage among Internet users who called it ridiculous.

"It's a shameless lie," the victim's father Xing Caifang told Southern Metropolis Daily today. "How is it even possible to open handcuffs with paper money?"

The victim's uncle You Zengqiang said Xing had no motive to kill himself because he knew he wouldn't be sentenced to death for theft.

His father demanded security videos of the interrogation room when the accident happened. But six video clips released by Kunming police yesterday found that Xing hanged himself in the camera's blind spot.
