Dafeng tourism festival shows more than deer

AN international ecotourism festival will be held next week in Dafeng, a coastal city in Jiangsu Province known for its natural reserve for Pere David's deer or Milu in Chinese.

The weeklong festival, sponsored by Xinmin Evening News, will have more than 20 events, including the launch of an animation theme park, beer and food promotions, and a beauty pageant.

Dafeng is dubbed the "Home of Pere David's deer" as it has 1,789 heads of a rare deer species that has "the tail of a donkey, the head of a horse, the hoofs of a cow, the and antlers of a deer." The deer was extinct in China but was reintroduced from Britain to its ancestral home in 1986.

The Dafeng Ecotourism Festival will run from May 16 to 22.
