Dairy farmers use chlorine dioxide to keep milk fresh
DAIRY farmers in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were found to use chlorine dioxide, a banned additive, to keep milk fresh, Guangzhou-based Nanfang Daily reported today.
Wang Dingmian, chairman of Guangzhou Dairy Association in the capital of Guangdong Province, said the colorless and odorless chemical compound can prevent milk from getting spoiled for two days.
He said chlorine dioxide is allowed by China's regulations on food additives for spraying on vegetables, fruits and some aquatic products to keep them from perishing. Some dairy factories use it to sterilize manufacturing equipment.
Wang said he has reported the problem to food safety authorities and told the paper that no similar violation has been found in Guangdong Province.
