Dairy firm denies staff told to buy its product
DAIRY giant Bright Dairy has denied claims it forced staff to buy baby formula or milk powder for pregnant women or quit their jobs.
The husband of a saleswoman at Bright Dairy’s Hefei branch in east China’s Anhui Province told China National Radio his wife was told she had to buy three boxes of the company’s product.
A box contains six cans of formula or milk powder, with each can priced at more than 200 yuan (US$32), the man surnamed Zhang said.
“My family don’t need baby formula nor milk powder for pregnant women, but we had no choice because the job is important for us,” he said. He said his wife earned about 2,000 yuan per month.
Because he had read similar stories about other companies, Zhang said he decided to complain to the media.
Bright Dairy, a Shanghai-listed unit of Bright Food, later then called his wife, he said, saying the money would be refunded.
Bright Dairy said it offered incentives to staff who achieved sales by promoting products to relatives or friends, but had never forced staff to buy themselves.
However, it conceded that the Hefei branch might have misunderstood the policy.
Earlier, beverage maker Hangzhou Wahaha Group denied similar claims.
According to the radio station, staff were forced them to buy milk powder nearing its expiry date.
Wahaha said there was an internal promotion where staff were offered milk powder at discount prices. Staff were never forced to buy.
