Dalian: Japanese plane left on its own

AIRPORT officials in Dalian City in northeast Liaoning Province denied an earlier report that a Japanese cargo plane was refused entry due to its excessive radiation level.

An All Nippon Airways cargo plane landed at the Dalian airport at 2:25pm on March 16. The airport inspectors detected radiation in its freight as high as 2.2 microsieverts, 22 times the normal rate, an unnamed airport official told Xinhua.

The airport reported the case to higher authorities. But the ANA crew told the airport controller that they decided to return to Japan "due to a tight schedule." The plane took off from the Dalian airport at 5:30pm, Xinhua said today.

The International Atomic Energy Agency says if the radiation level of an item is three times the normal rate, it is deemed contaminated and proper measure is required to handle the polluted item.
