Dalian factory workers detained for attacking CCTV reporters
ELEVEN workers of a chemical plant in Dalian in northeastern Liaoning Province have been detained for beating China Central Television journalists and preventing them from reporting on a breached dike in the plant that might cause a chemical spill.
The 11 workers of the Fujia Dahua Petrochemical Co Ltd allegedly attacked the CCTV reporters as they tried to enter the plant to do an interview about the collapsed dike, caused by tropical storm Muifa, China National Radio reported today.
Waves as high as 20 meters crushed the dike on Monday and posed threat to the Fujia Dahua complex where tons of unspecified chemicals were stored.
CCTV reporters asked to interview the company's officials about the possible chemical spill but were stopped at the gate by the workers. Dozens of workers pushed the reporters around, seized their cameras and broke other equipment. They also smashed a police car that accompanied the journalists, CCTV reported.
Dalian government's deputy secretary-general, publicity department officials, and the police chief of Jinzhou Development Zone accompanied the CCTV crew to the plant and were also banned from entering the plant. Some of them were attacked as well in the clash, CCTV reported.
The company has not commented on the incident.
Provincial authorities said the breached dike has been temporarily restored after workers dumped rocks and concrete blocks on the tumbled section.
