Dangdang, Amazon caught selling fake makeups

ONLINE vendors Dangdang and Amazon have been accused of selling fake products of major cosmetics brands.
Estee Lauder, Chanel and other brand-name cosmetics sold in a Dangdang online store came from a wholesale market in Beijing which could not provide anything to prove their authenticity, CCTV reported yesterday. These products also lacked a Chinese label, a violation of market rules.
An employee of Meihanmeizhuang Cosmetics Store based in a residential complex in Fangshan District of Beijing told the CCTV that their store sold about 2,000 kinds of cosmetics via Dangdang and sent out goods worth over 100,000 yuan (US$16,100) a day nationwide.
The unidentified worker said the goods were bought from the Tianzhaotian Wholesale Market in Beijing.
The CCTV report also exposed that a day cream from Estee Lauder and a balm from L'Oreal were selling 50 percent and 40 percent cheaper on Amazon, compared with prices in a real store. They were proven counterfeit by the brand holders.
Dangdang said it has closed the stores exposed by CCTV and will provide a refund to customers.
Amazon said it already shut down the accused store in February after receiving complaints and offered a refund. It promised to strengthen examination of all products to prevent frauds.
Estee Lauder said in a statement after the CCTV program that it has never authorized Dangdang and Amazon as its retail channels and advised consumers avoid these sites when buying its products.
