Dangerous criminals break out of Hebei prison
An unknown number of major criminal offenders escaped from a jail in north China's Hebei province on Sunday police confirmed yesterday.
Armed police are hunting for the escaped inmates, a police officer on duty at the Hebei No. 3 Prison in Shenzhou City told Beijing News today. He declined to reveal details about the breakout, but denied any prison guards were injured.
Police patrols have been intensified at crossroads near the prison and multiple checkpoints have been set up at highways linking to Shenzhou.
A local villager said the prisoners possibly escaped at 4am, when prison guards changed shift, and hid within rows of corn in the nearby field.
Major criminal offenders who serve long-term imprisonment are held in the prison.
