Dangling riders seek apology
TOURISTS are demanding an apology from a Beijing park that suddenly cut a cable car service and left more than 100 people hanging in the air for about 10 minutes yesterday.
Riders found themselves dangling 500 meters off the ground at the Fragrant Hills Park, according to tourist Liu Gang.
Police arrived to rescue them, and the cable cars moved again 10 minutes later, he said.
Angry tourists called the park's customer service, but an official refused to apologize and claimed the park stopped the cable cars to carry out "political tasks," according to Liu.
"What kind of political task can allow the park to hang so many lives in the air for so long a time," Liu said on a microblog.
The director of the cable car station said operations were halted because of strong winds.
The director, who declined to be named, denied there were "political tasks," saying operations were stopped for safety reasons.
He said: "The wind is dangerous for cable car operations, so the park stopped the cars and started again after the wind calmed."
However, Liu asked why no information was given before or during the incident to let passengers know what was happening.
The director said officials with the park were investigating and will respond to the concerns of tourists soon.
