Daoxiangcun stores found selling fake duck blood

A time-honored Beijing food company is investigating its franchise stores that allegedly bought fake duck blood from meat processors and sold it at a price fivefold its value.

The Beijing Daoxiangcun Foodstuff Co Ltd said it never produced duck blood and never allowed its franchise stores to sell it, not to say the fake one made from pork blood with harmful additives.

Blood curd is a delicacy in Chinese cuisine. Chicken and duck blood is more expensive than pork blood.

Beijing News, a local tabloid, reported that two major meat processors, Beijing No. 5 Meat Processing Factory and Beijng Zhongrui Foodstuff Co Ltd, subcontracted their franchise stores and turned a blind eye to their illegal practice.

Several Daoxiangcun franchises, including the ones in the Huilongguan area and Beijing Normal University, sold fake duck blood and lied that the blood was fresh although it had been stored for 15 hours.

Li Xingmin, a food expert with the China Agricultural University, told the paper that fake duck blood was made from poor-quality pork blood and might be mixed with formaldehyde and industrial pigment, which are harmful to liver and kidney.
