Daughter pardons mom for cutting off her ears

A young woman whose ears were cut off by her mother six years ago underwent a surgical reconstruction of artificial ears and is getting along well with her mother who was given a reprieve from prison.

Xiao Jie, 20, is now a beautician in Guangzhou, the capital of southern Guangdong Province. Thanks to her pardon, her mother surnamed Chen received a lighter sentence, the local Nanfang Daily reported today.

After the incident, Chen was sentenced to six years in prison but her sentence was commuted to three years with a five-year reprieve by the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court.

Chen, an illiterate from rural Sichuan Province, was in a rage after her 14-year-old daughter stolen money from home and didn't listen to her at all, the paper said.

On the early morning of October 27, 2005, Chen cut off the girl's ears while she was still in sleep and flushed the ears down the toilet. She ignored the girl's screaming and begging and handed herself to the police.

The woman was tested mentally normal before the court trial.
