Day proposed to remember quake victims

CHINA'S political advisors have proposed to establish a national earthquake day on May 12 to remember last year's devastating earthquake in the country's southwest.

The special day would help the public "be alert to danger in times of peace", according to a proposal by the Central Committee of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party for the Second Session of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

The proposal suggested people hold activities to mourn the quake victims on May 12 at 2:28pm ?? the time when a magnitude-8.0 earthquake hit Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province. The quake, the most destructive natural disaster to hit China for decades, left more than 87,000 people dead or missing and millions homeless.
