Deadly grassland fire put out in Sichuan
FIRE fighters have put out a wild fire raging for about 24 hours on a plateau grassland in Sichuan Province by noon today.
The provincial forest department said the fire fighters were still busy clearing embers in an area of about 200 mu (about 13 hectares) burnt grassland.
Twenty-two people, including soldiers and civilians, died yesterday after they were trapped by the blaze during the fire control work, according to the provincial forest fire police department.
The provincial weather station said no strong gale would affect the region today, which would be conducive for the fire fighters to extinguish embers.
The grassland is located some six kilometers from the county government seat in Daofu County, Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, Sichuan Province.
