Death for man who slayed 2 officials
A MAN who stabbed to death two family planning officials and injured four other people in a revenge attack was sentenced to death yesterday at a court in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Prosecutors said He Shenguo staged the attack on July 23 last year following a dispute with the family planning office in Guangxi’s Dongxing.
Officials there had earlier refused to grant He’s fourth child permanent residency, or hukou, in the city because he had not paid a fine for breaking family planning rules, said the Intermediate People’s Court of Fangchenggang City.
Armed with a knife, He burst into the office and began attacking four officials, killing two.
When a fifth official and a lawyer who worked in the same building heard the disturbance and went to help, He also slashed at them, the court said.
Autopsies showed that the two people who died had suffered severe brain and spinal injuries. Four others were treated in hospital for minor injuries.
Despite the severity of the attack, He’s lawyer appealed to the court for leniency, saying the father of four had a history of mental illness and had been certified as disabled in 2010. He was also angry because family planning officials had performed a sterilization operation on his wife without consulting him.
The court, however, rejected the plea, saying He was in full control of his senses at the time of the attack.
It convicted him of murder and sentenced him to death. He was also ordered to pay more than 280,000 yuan (US$45,000) in compensation to the families of his victims.
He, who has three daughters and a son ranging in age from 6 years to 14 months, will not appeal the verdict, according to the China News Service.
