Death for politician who killed mining millionaire

A FORMER political advisor has been sentenced to death for blackmailing and killing a millionaire mine owner in northeast China.

Xianyang City Intermediate People's Court in Shaanxi Province handed over the verdict to Guo Hong'an, former member of Zichang County Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, on Monday, today's Chinese Business View newspaper reported.

Guo, also Party chief and general manager of Zichang County Medicine Co Ltd, hoped to cooperate with Zhu Baoqi in the mining business, but Zhu rejected the idea.

Guo then asked the county government's then secretary-general Wang Zhiguo to force Zhu into giving him 50 million yuan (US$7.32 million) to compensate the loss he said he had suffered due to the deal's failure.

Zhu was forced to sign an agreement to compensate Guo 30.5 million yuan and gave him another 10 million yuan. Wang took 2 million yuan from Guo for his contribution in the deal, the report said.

But Guo still felt humiliated by the rejection. He got Bai Xiaohong to hire He Sixiao and Bai Bihe to kill Zhu on June 15, 2008 in Xianyang.

Guo, He and Bai Bihe were sentenced to death while Bai Xiaohong received 11 years in prison and Wang got four years.
