Death for property magnate who hired killers

A COURT in northeast China today upheld its death sentence against a businessman who hired two assassins to kill an architect 鈥 and then failed to pay the bill.

Wang Wenxiang, once one of Heilongjiang's top 10 businessmen and a standing committee member of the provincial political consultative conference, was given the death penalty along with hired killer Bai Peng, 28, said Heilongjiang High People's Court today.

The other hired killer Yu Yi, 25, received a death sentence with a two-year reprieve, reported Xinhua news agency today.

The three were also ordered to pay 340,000 yuan (US$49,795) compensation to the victim's family.

Wang hired Bai and Yu to kill Zhong Yishi, 49, an architect and legal representative of a construction company, because he frequently filed lawsuits against Wang's property company.

Wang hired his secretary Bai to "handle Zhong" when he filed another lawsuit against Wang's company in 2008. Bai agreed and lured his friend Yu with promises big money.

Bai and Yu abducted Zhong in May last year and suffocated him to death. They then burnt his body in a brick oven.

Wang didn't pay Bai and Yu after the murder.
