Death for two men who plotted blast that killed 4 in office

TWO men were sentenced to death today for plotting an office explosion that killed four people and injured 16 in southwest China’s Yunnan Province in May, a court ruled.

The convicts, Deng Deyong and Song Zhaoyu, also were ordered to pay 980,000 yuan (US$161,994) in compensation to the victims’ families, the Zhaotong city Intermediate People’s Court said.

The court said Deng and Song paid 100 yuan to hire Zhao Dengyong, a resident of Qiaojia County in Zhaotong, to take a bag to the county government demolition office on May 10.

Zhao was unaware the bag contained an explosive device. When he stepped into the office, Deng detonated the explosion remotely, which caused a blast and killed Zhao and three other residents.

The court said Deng plotted the deadly blast because he wanted to take revenge on the government demolition team. Deng’s house was in a demolition area, but he could not build a new one elsewhere because his old house didn’t have a legal building permit.

The court also sentenced Chen Hezhi to eight years in prison for selling 41 detonators to Song in March 2006.
