Death of twins highlights need for car safety seats

THE death of a mother and her twin babies in a road accident on Wednesday was the latest tragedy involving children not restrained in safety seats.

The woman was in the front passenger seat holding one of her 8-month-old babies when the SUV driven by her husband hit a concrete barrier on a highway in central China’s Henan Province.

The other child was in the back seat along with two adult relatives.

The mother and both babies died instantly.

Three months ago, a 6-month-old baby died in a rear-end collision in east China’s Zhejiang Province. The baby was flung forward and hit the windshield.

According to government figures, some 20,000 children under the age of 14 die in road accidents in China every year. It is not known how many were in safety seats.

A survey in June by online forum Autohome found that about 41 percent of children under the age of 12 in China’s first tier cities were restrained in safety seats during car journeys. In other cities, the figure was 23.5 percent.

The figures for three years previously were 7.5% and 2.9% respectively.

The use of child safety seats is not compulsory in China.

However, Shenzhen in south China’s Guangdong Province introduced stricter rules this year, saying children under the age of 4 had to be in a safety seat while children under 12 were not allowed to sit in the front passenger seat.
