Death penalty for drug lords using AIDS patients

TWO leaders of a gang in north China's Henan Province have been sentenced to death for organizing AIDS patients and teenagers to transport and trade more than three kilograms of heroin.

Kaifeng Intermediate People's Court sentenced Liu Fucheng to death and Han Quanzhong to death with two years' reprieve, Xinhua news agency reported today.

Another 15 gang members were jailed for more than three years, the report said.

In April 2008, Liu handed 129 packs of heroin to Yuan Huimin, a restaurant worker in Zhengzhou, and asked her to keep the drugs. Yuan reported it to the police, leading them to bust the gang.

Investigation found Liu and Han organized more than 10 AIDS patients to transport 1,920 grams of heroin from July 2006 to January 2007, the court said.

From July 2005 to April 2007, Liu had also asked other people to trade 1,267 grams of heroin in Guangzhou and Zhengzhou cities.

In December 2001 and November 2004, Liu jointly arranged two people to transport 933 grams of heroin from Yunnan Province.

Liu's wife Yang Junli was also jailed for laundering money from the drug trade. She paid 984,827 yuan (US$144,243) to buy apartments in Zhengzhou and spent 598,514 yuan to buy insurance for herself and her children, the court said.
