Death penalty for robber

A MAN who killed five members of a family in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has been sentenced to death for murder, robbery and theft and fined 50,000 yuan (US$7,604).

Li Huanwen was also stripped of his political rights and all his personal assets confiscated in the ruling handed down by Bayan NurCity Intermediate People's Court in Inner Mongolia. Three accomplices received jail terms ranging from two to five years.

The court heard that Li had sought refuge from a friend's relative, Zhang Jianrui, after a robbery in east China's Shandong Province in May 2006.

Zhang employed him in his factory while Li changed his name to Gao Shufu and had surgery to change his appearance and escape detection.

However, when Zhang's son threatened to report him to the police after an argument, Li turned his thoughts to murder.

He hacked Zhang, his wife, his daughter and two sons to death on the morning on March 27, 2010. Police seized him three days later.

The court heard that Li and his accomplices had committed 27 armed robberies between 2002 and 2005.
