Death penalty upheld for mafia kingpins

THE Sichuan Provincial Higher People's Court yesterday upheld the death sentence for two leading members of a mafia-like ring.

Yang Long and Ren Simin were convicted of organizing and leading the ring as well as manslaughter, causing injuries and extortion, today's Chengdu Daily reported.

The court also upheld jail sentences for the other 29 gang members ranging from two to 20 years.

The ring was launched in Nanchong City in 2003 and soon expanded throughout the province, the court said.

It monopolized many industries in Nanchong including sand and construction. To force its way into the city's transport market, the gang had organized a fight of nearly 100 people downtown, resulting one death, the court said.
