Death rate from flu falls
A TOTAL of 27 Chinese people died of the H1N1 influenza last week, bringing the death toll on the Chinese mainland to more than 730, the Health Ministry said yesterday.
The country confirmed 1,556 cases of the flu from January 11 to 17. Among them, 348 had been treated in hospital.
Both figures were much smaller than those of the week before. From January 4 to 10, 2,173 cases were reported, including 51 deaths.
However, the ministry warned that the H1N1 flu would continue to spread this year.
The risk of mass infection might increase due to the upcoming Spring Festival in February when Chinese people travel home for family reunions, the ministry said.
The ministry urged local health authorities to strengthen monitoring and reporting of any infections.
According to the latest report, the disease had killed at least 737 people by January 17.
As of Tuesday, more than 64.7 million Chinese people had been vaccinated.
