Death sentence appeal

A TOURISM official in southwest China's Sichuan Province is appealing to a higher court after being sentenced to death for drug trafficking, yesterday's Life News reported.

Luobu Wojie, 42, was made vice director of the tourism bureau of Jinyang County in Sichuan's Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture last March but just four months later went with two others to Yunnan's Ruili City to buy drugs.

The gang bought six heroin bars weighing 2,159 grams and headed back to Sichuan's Panzhihua City. One man, Biqu Labu, left when they arrived at Yunnan's Baoshan City, leaving Luobu Wojie and Biqu Sejia to continue.

But they ran into a police checkpoint. Luobu Wojie was caught. Police seized the drugs and later rounded up the other two.

Because he was the leader, Luobu Wojie was sentenced to death on April 7 by the Intermediate Court of Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture.

Biqu Labu received a life sentence. Biqu Sejia's punishment is not known.
