Death sentence for family planning officials' killer

A court in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Thursday sentenced a man to death after finding him guilty of killing two government officials and injuring four other people last summer in a row over family planning.

He Shenguo was convicted of intentional homicide and ordered to pay 280,000 yuan (US$45,500) for plaintiffs' losses, according to the Fangchenggang City Intermediate People's Court.

On July 23 last year, He slashed people at the Dongxing City Population and Family Planning Bureau after the bureau refused to register his fourth child with a permanent resident's permit, or "hukou," as he had not paid the fee for a child born outside the country's family planning policy.

Two clerks of the bureau surnamed Zhao and Huang died on the spot. Four other people, including a passing lawyer, were injured. He Shenguo was arrested by police at the scene.

He said he will not appeal to a higher court over the ruling.
