Death sentence for killer policeman
A POLICEMAN in Yunnan Province was sentenced to death today for shooting a civilian to death during an argument.
The Intermediate People's Court of Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan's Mengzi County found Ji Zhongchun, 42, guilty and pronounced the sentence. Ji used to serve in the Mengzi County Public Security Bureau, China News Service reported.
Ji was also ordered to pay Xu Xinyue, wife of the victim Pan Jun, 100,000 yuan (US$14,600).
The court said Ji was off duty but was carrying his gun, and had been drinking and drunk driving before the shooting on February 13.
Ji shot Pan three times during an argument after Pan claimed that Ji's car had scratched his vehicle. Pan worked for a local electricity company.
Ji had claimed Pan had assaulted him and he had acted in self-defense but the court did not accept this.
Ji's stayed at the scene and handed his gun to police but the court did not consider this was sufficient for it to consider a lighter sentence.
Zhang Jiaxing, Ji's attorney, said it should be thought of as a surrender as Ji had stayed at the scene and handed over his gun to the police as soon as they arrived. There were three bullets remaining in the chamber.
Ji told the court he would appeal.
Xu and Pan's family said they were satisfied with the sentence.
