Death sentence for killing wife and 6 of her family

A MAN who killed his pregnant wife and six members of her family in northwest China after she said she was divorcing him was sentenced to death yesterday.
Ma Yongdong said he wouldn’t appeal against the ruling handed down by the Pengyang County People’s Court in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
Ma, 25, used a knife to kill his wife, Lan Xiuying, her parents, grandparents and two nieces, aged 3 and 1, in their home in Pengyang on October 14 last year, the court heard.
Villagers said Ma and his wife would often quarrel as she wanted a divorce. They said Ma had a strained relationship with his in-laws as they backed their daughter, the court heard.
Lan’s relatives told Xinhua news agency that Ma had threatened his wife stating, “If you insist on divorcing me, I will kill your family.”
The murder shocked the nation and police offered a reward of 100,000 yuan (US$16,060) for Ma’s capture. He was caught four days after the killings.
Ma pleaded guilty at his trial last month and said that he regretted his actions.
