Death sentence for pickaxe killer

A COURT in northeast China's Liaoning Province has sentenced a man to death for murdering four members of his family and a tenant, a spokesman said yesterday.
Around midnight on June 9, Xiao Guang, a 31-year-old resident of Liaozhong County, killed his eight-year-old daughter, wife and his parents with a pickaxe, a Shenyang Intermediate People's Court spokesman said.
Xiao also killed a female tenant and injured another person in the rental housing unit he managed. He had been drinking beforehand, said the spokesman.
He then tried to set himself on fire but was rescued by firefighters, the spokesman said.
Xiao committed the act as a result of heavy debt, he told the court.
