Death sentence lightened for mogul
A FORMER real estate mogul in Chongqing Municipality was given a suspended death penalty in a final ruling for paying henchmen to kill the only son of a family that had refused illegal relocation requests.
The Chongqing Higher People's Court delivered Xiang Shiquan the lenient sentence after he promised the victim's family enormous compensation in exchange for their forgiveness.
Xiang had been sentenced to death late last year after being found guilty of hiring thugs to kill Cui Jun in September 2007.
The Black Dragon Group headed by Xiang started relocating people at a Chongqing in 2004 without government approval. Two families, including Cui's, refused.
Xiang then hired four thugs to teach Cui a lesson. They stabbed him to death.
