Death sentence upheld for killer doctor

AN appeal court this morning upheld the death sentence for a doctor who killed eight pupils and injured another five outside a school in southeast China.

Fujian Province Higher People's Court threw out 42-year-old Zhang Mingsheng's appeal against the first verdict handed down on April 8 by Nanping Intermediate People's Court, today's People.com.cn reported.

Zheng insisted during today's court hearing that he was forced to kill people after being persecuted by others.

Zheng launched the knife attack on March 23 outside the gates of Nanping Experimental Primary School.

Neighbors said Zheng "started to act weird" about a year ago after he quit his job and his girlfriend left him - setbacks that apparently set his nerves on edge.
