Death sentences meted out in pair of meth cases

TWO local courts in China have sentenced two men to death and two others to death with reprieve on convictions of trafficking and manufacturing illegal drugs.

The ringleader of a Xi'an-based drug syndicate was sentenced to death for making 13.5 kilograms of methamphetamine in what was described as the largest drug-manufacturing case ever in the city in the past 60 years.

Wang Liang, 49, organized the syndicate in 2009, one year after he was bailed out as a convicted drug smuggler in Yunnan Province, the Intermediate People's Court of Xi'an in northwestern China's Shaanxi Province heard.

Wang was convicted of drug smuggling in 1993 by Kunming Intermediate People's Court in Yunnan Province, and sentenced to death with a two-year grace period. He was bailed out in 2008.

The other three main members, Xie Zunfu, Chen Yuanbing and Xiao Yueshuang were jailed for life, the Xi'an Evening Post reported yesterday, citing the court.

The court said Wang rented four apartments as dens and gathered several people to produce methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth or ice, in October 2010.

Xie was ordered to buy chemicals, tools and facilities. Xiao, Chen and a member surnamed Xue were responsible for the preliminary extracting and processing while Wang refined and purified the products at the last stage, the report said.

They were busted in a police raid on December 15, 2009, in their dens with drugs and facilities seized.

In another case, the Intermediate People's Court in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, convicted Hong Kong resident Chen Kwow-Wing of drug trafficking in which nearly 800 kilograms of methamphetamine were involved. The court also sentenced Zhu Sida and Gan Jianhang to death with reprieves, Chen Chaonan to life in prison, and Huang Jianjin to 15 years in prison for their roles in assisting Chen. The five were caught on August 20, 2010.

China has cut down on capital punishment in recent years though it retains it for 68 offenses, including drug trafficking and manufacturing.
