Death threat for smearing China's top donor

SEVERAL journalists who doubted the motive of China's foremost philanthropist Chen Guangbiao claimed they had received death threats from the Internet for their reports, but Chen himself denied this had anything to do with him, Shandong Business News reported today.

The journalists of different media said on Weibo, China's equivalent to Twitter, that they received the death threat in email with photos of dead bodies at about the same time. Though the threat made no mention of Chen's name, they believed it arise from their recent reports on Chen.

Chen told the newspaper yesterday that these threats were not sent at his order. "I am a giver to charity. Why should I use such a despicable way to defend myself and inflict sorrow on the entire society?"

Some journalists have already reported to police. According to the law, the email sender will not be convicted as a criminal if the threats did not turn real, but the sender will be charged with disturbing social order and will be responsible for the victim's emotional damage.
