Death toll from China fireworks shop explosion rises to five

THE death toll from an explosion at a fireworks shop in east China's Zhejiang Province yesterday, the first day of the new Chinese lunar year, has risen to five, according to local authorities.

The accident happened at about 4pm at Xiangzhu Township, Yongkang City, when the shop owner, surnamed Chen, set off a firecracker for trial but ignited the fireworks stored outside the shop.

The victims included three children and two adults. Another three injured people are in a stable condition.

Chen has been detained by police.
