Death toll from bridge fall coach rises to 18
THE death toll from a coach that fell off an icy highway bridge in southwest China's Guizhou Province on Wednesday has risen to 18, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
Two of the 40 people hurt in the crash have died.
The 53-seater coach was carrying 57 people - including one infant and three children - when it toppled off the highway, said investigators.
Traveling from Yiwu in Zhejiang Province and bound for Luzhou in Sichuan Province, the coach plunged into a 10-meter ravine at 6:40pm while on an icy section of the Lanzhou-Haikou expressway in Guiding County.
Preliminary investigations said driver fatigue, speeding and slippery roads were to blame for the accident.
Guizhou was hit by heavy snow on Wednesday which led to wet and slippery roads.
Traffic officials had spread salt on the highway but failed to prevent the accident.
Six seriously injured people have been transferred to hospitals in Duyun and Guiyang, for treatment.
Traffic police have improved highway maintenance and increase patrols along the highway following the accident.
It was the second deadly bus accident in China in two days. Thirteen died and 41 others were injured on Tuesday when a heavy-duty truck collided with a coach on a highway in central Hunan Province.
