Death toll in pit gas explosion rises to 28
THE death toll in a central China mine blast last week has risen to 28 and about 16 people were believed still trapped underground, authorities said yesterday.
Rescuers found the bodies of eight trapped miners on Sunday, said a spokesman for the rescue headquarters in Yichuan County, Henan Province. Another body was found under debris of collapsed buildings on the surface.
Investigations showed that the blast killed 23 miners underground and five on the surface.
Sixteen people were still trapped underground, the spokesman said.
More than 500 rescuers were searching for the trapped miners, he said.
Prosecutors were interrogating Wang Liujun, a mining official in Yichuan, and had put three other officials "under control." The mine's deputy manager, Wang Zhengwei, and employee, He Qingshui, who fled after the blast, have been captured, and Wang Guozheng, a manager, turned himself in, the spokesman said.
About 90 miners were underground when the gas explosion occurred at 7:20pm last Wednesday in a coal pit privately owned by Guomin Mining Co in Yichuan County, Henan Province. The rescue headquarters said 51 miners survived the explosion.
