Death toll of Zhejiang explosion rises to 4
The number of people killed in a blast in east China’s Zhejiang Province on Sunday has increased to four, authorities said yesterday.
Two previously missing victims were confirmed to have died after a police investigation at a demolished factory in Ningbo City’s Jiangbei District, the site of the blast. The explosion occurred at about 8:50am.
The two previously missing victims were the father and cousin of the explosives’ male owner, whose surname is Shan.
Errors during the disposal of illegally produced explosives caused the blast which injured 19 people, said technicians from the local public security department. Authorities have ruled out the possibility that the explosion was intentional.
Police found that the disposal work began at the site on Saturday night and it resumed at 8:40am on Sunday.
On Monday, police arrested Shan in Hubei Province. He had previously been wanted for the alleged manufacture and sale of explosives.
Shan confessed that he had asked family members in Ningbo to destroy the explosives.
Residents affected by the blast had been relocated to two sites. Maintenance work had started in residential communities nearby. The affected residents were expected to receive subsidies after evaluation.
