Death toll of steel mill gas poisoning climbs to 6
SIX workers have been confirmed dead in a gas leak accident last Thursday in a steel plant in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, and seven injured workers are now in stable condition, officials said.
The gas poisoning tragedy happened around the noon of February 23 in Nanjing Meishan Steel Plant when 13 workers were repairing a gas tank. One worker cut off a bolt, causing carbon monoxide gas to leak into the tank, an initial investigation showed.
The plant is operated by Shanghai Meishan Iron & Steel Co, a subsidiary of the state-owned Baosteel. It can produce 3 million tons of steel annually.
Work safety officials in Jiangsu Province said those who are responsible for the accident will be punished according to the law.
