The death toll from a road accident in northwest China's Gansu province today has risen to 23 after two more people died in hospital, local authorities have said.
A vehicle, carrying railway construction workers, overturned in a mountain tunnel at 7.30am in the Manwa township in Lintao county of Dingxi city, the Gansu Provincial Work Safety Administration announced in a statement. The tunnel was still under construction as part of a railway.
Twenty one workers were killed instantly. Seven others were injured and rushed to the Dingxi Municipal People's Hospital.
"Two of them have died after emergency operation. The other five are still in serious condition," Zhang Xueming, head of the hospital, told Xinhua.
An initial investigation shows that a brake failure was to blame for the accident, a spokesman with the local railway authorities said.
