Death toll rises to 94 in Gansu quake
THE death toll in an earthquake that hit northwest China's Gansu Province has climbed to 94, local authorities said today.
887 people are reported to be injured, and around 123,000 in the province affected. The 6.6-magnitude quake jolted Dingxi city on the border of Minxian and Zhangxian counties at a quarter to eight yesterday morning, at a depth of 20 kilometers. As of 6pm yesterday, 422 aftershocks had been recorded, the strongest measuring 5.6 magnitude.
The Ministry of Civil Affairs has allocated 10,000 tents, 30,000 quilts and 10,000 sleeping bags. The Gansu provincial government has allocated 5 million yuan for relief efforts. 2 helicopters and about 3,000 armed police, firefighters, local militiamen and local government staff are being deployed in rescue efforts.
