Death verdict for killer truck driver
THE driver of a coal truck was sentenced to death yesterday for killing a Mongolian herder with his vehicle during a protest by villagers.
The verdict on Li Lindong was announced by the Intermediate People's Court of the Xilingol League in Inner Mongolia after a six-hour trial.
Lu Xiangdong, who was sitting beside Li in the truck when the herder, Mergen, was dragged to his death under the vehicle, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Two others, Wu Xiaowei and Li Minggang, were jailed for three years for obstruction of justice.
The four men said they would appeal.
About 160 people witnessed yesterday's trial, including relatives of defendants, as well as Mergen's relatives.
Mergen and 20 other herders had attempted to block Li Lindong's vehicle on May 10 in a protest at the noise and dust created by coal trucks running through Mergen's village in the West Ujimqin Banner in the Xilingol League.
Police said Li Lindong dragged Mergen under his truck for 145 meters before he died.
Wu and Li Minggang later blocked police trying to stop the truck, allowing Li Lindong and Lu to escape.
Mergen's death triggered protests in the region, with thousands of students taking to the streets last week in the city of Xilinhot, the government seat of the Xilingol League.
The region's coal mining industry bureau has recently started a month-long overhaul of the area's mines.
This included ordering local work safety groups to strengthen supervision of the area's coal mines, as well as to pay more attention to the welfare of local residents.
Babu, chairman of the Lawyers Association of Inner Mongolia, said it was a case with "serious circumstances and consequences and significant social impact."
Uzhina, Mergen's wife, said she had been satisfied with the government's response to the case.
