Death-row convict faces retrial for robbery blast

A man who received the death penalty for killing two people and injuring 15 others in a bank robbery blast will face a second trial at an intermediate court in Wuhan, Hubei Province tomorrow.

Wang Haijian, 25, was convicted of homicide by setting off a deadly explosion outside a Construction Bank of China office in Wuhan in a robbery attempt last December. He was sentenced to death in May.

On May 21 Wang appealed the court ruling and asked for a lenient sentence. His lawyer Hu Yanmei insisted that Wang neither robbed the bank nor intended to kill anyone.

Hubei's higher court will give a verdict after the second trial, Changjiang Daily, a local newspaper, reported today.

Wang's two accomplices, Wang Wei and Wang An'an, who were sentenced to 10 years and six years respectively, also appealed to the court ruling and will appear in tomorrow's trial.
