Debt-ridden gambler kills son's classmates out of envy

BEIJING police have caught the man who allegedly killed the neighbor's twin children as he was depressed over gambling debts and envied the neighbor's happy life, Beijing News reported today.

The suspect surnamed Wen, 42, invited the two children -- a boy and a girl – to join his son for an outing last Saturday. The parents agreed because the children were classmates and often played together. Wen then drove the kids to a hotel in suburban Beijing where he suffocated the neighbor's children to death.

Wen then dumped the bodies in a nearby river and called his wife to pick up their son. His wife was held for investigation by arriving police and Wen was caught in Tongzhou City on Monday.

Wen said he "lost interest in life" as he was burdened by gambling debts. Wen said he envied his neighbor's peaceful and happy life and wanted to avenge his own failure.

His neighbors said Wen was a real estate developer and owned several properties worth nearly 100 million yuan (US$15.41 million) in Beijing. His son and two victims were good friends at school.
