Decision welcomed
FOREIGN ministry spokesman Hong Lei said yesterday China welcomes the Arctic Council's decision to grant it permanent observer status.
"China has all along supported the purpose and objective of the Arctic Council," Hong said.
A Chinese shipping firm is reportedly planning the country's first commercial voyage through a shortcut across the Arctic Ocean to the United States and Europe, saving time and money. The distance from Shanghai to Hamburg is 5,185 kilometers shorter via the Arctic than going through the Suez Canal.
