Deeper ties with the UK
GOVERNMENT officials and industry leaders called for deeper collaboration between China and UK in science and technology at a UK-China innovation showcase during yesterday’s Pujiang Innovation Forum.
Martyn Roper, charge d’affaires at the British Embassy in Beijing, said science and innovation partnerships were at the center of a golden era in the UK-China relationship.
Both sides have been tackling global challenges and developing new technologies to drive growth since the UK overtook Japan in 2011 to become China’s second largest science partner in terms of co-publications.
Roper said he hoped more connections and conversations would flourish into successful future partnerships.
Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang said China would continue to seek an open and transparent environment for innovation and to diversify and deepen dialogue.
“The showcase is expected to bring us more understanding of the UK’s innovative industry and further expand partnerships and exchanges between the two countries,” Wan said.
Both countries had made significant progress in collaborative projects such as climate science, health care and education, he said.
Also yesterday, Wan and Jo Johnson, the UK’s Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation, co-chaired the 8th UK-China Joint Commission on Science, Technology and Innovation to decide priorities for future collaboration and key areas for government support.
