Delayed rescue of hit-and-run victim sparks anger
POLICE in central Henan Province are offering a reward of 50,000 yuan (US$7,519) for leads to the arrest of a hit-and-run suspect who killed a college student last Tuesday and hundreds of her fellow students blocked the road for one and a half hours until police arrived.
Students of Pingdingshan University in Pingdingshan City said the injured victim, a female junior student surnamed Guo, could have been saved if the ambulance arrived earlier, China Youth Daily reported today.
Some witnesses phoned the ambulance and police immediately but gradually lost their hope after waiting for half an hour. They called on other passers-by, mostly students of the same university, to form a human shield around the victim to protect the evidence.
When the ambulance did arrive more than an hour later, the victim was already dead. Police didn't appear until one and a half hours later although their bureau was only five minutes' drive away.
Interview request to Pingdingshan Public Security Bureau went unanswered today. University officials said they were no liable for the accident as it happened outside the campus and they refused to comment on the delayed rescue by the ambulance and police, China Youth Daily reported.
