Demolition 'a mistake'
A COUPLE'S house in a north China city was torn down by mistake while they were in Beijing seeing a doctor.
Meng Suling, 61, received a phone call from her neighbor on January 20 saying her house in Zhangjiakou City in Hebei Province had been knocked down.
Meng was with her husband, who was being treated in a Beijing hospital, Yanzhao Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
Meng rushed home to find all their furniture buried in rubble.
"We have been living here for the whole life. This is our only house. Now it's ruined," Meng said. She called the police.
The neighborhood was due to be redeveloped by the Zhangjiakou Dixin real estate company but she hadn't signed a deal with the developer since compensation had yet to be agreed.
The company admitted it had demolished the wrong building by mistake and was willing to make up for the damage caused.
Meng demanded it rebuild the house immediately and pay 300,000 yuan (US$45,576) compensation.
The developer agreed to restore the house, but wouldn't pay compensation unless by court order, the report said.
