Demolition crew blamed for mother's suicide

A WOMAN who refused to relocate from her house attempted suicide after her 14-year-old daughter was upset to hear gossip about her parents' divorce from demolition workers in Jiangsu Province.

Guan Huizhen is in stable condition after treatment in the No. 3 People's Hospital in the city of Wuxi, reported the Yangtze Evening News today.

Guan, 48, said her daughter had refused to eat for four days after hearing the divorce gossip last week. She said the family had been harassed by the demolition company, who did not agree to the required sum of compensation.

On December 7, three demolition workers went to her daughter's school and said they wanted to ask her daughter whether Guan had divorced. The word soon spread among the girl's classmates.

Guan said she collapsed when her daughter questioned her about the divorce on December 8. Despite Guan's denial, the girl locked herself up in a room, crying and refusing any food, the newspaper said.

Guan swallowed two bottles of pills for hypertension to end her life that night. She was rushed to hospital in time by her relatives.
