Demolition death arrests
POLICE in Shanxi Province have detained five men who allegedly beat a villager to death and seriously injured another, after breaking into their house to carry out illegal demolition.
Some 10 people armed with spades, sticks and pickaxes smashed the windows and stormed into the house where the two victims, Meng Fugui and Wu Wenyuan, were sleeping in Guzhai Village of Taiyuan City, the province's capital, at 2am last Saturday.
The men started to beat the two until they passed out, reported yesterday's Beijing News. After dumping them on a remote road, the group proceeded to tear down the house using excavators. Meng, aged 54, died at the spot, while Wu is being treated in hospital.
House owner Wu said he and neighbor Meng were told in May to move out to make way for a government road extension project.
Saying compensation was too low, the men refused to move, and were harassed by thugs, allegedly hired by a demolition company.
Local officials called for an investigation. Police are hunting the rest of the gang.
On the same day, 56-year-old Cui Dexi was badly burned after setting himself on fire to protest against forced demolition in northeastern China's Heilongjiang Province.
