Demolition protester dies in fire

A MAN trying to stop his house being demolished died after he locked himself in and set himself on fire, police told news website thepaper.cn yesterday.

Local authorities in Pingyi County in east China’s Shandong Province said they were also investigating the incident.

Zhang Jimin’s body was found in a storeroom of his house in the county after the fire was extinguished on Monday afternoon.

Zhang Dezhi told the Southern Metropolis Daily that his 46-year-old uncle had been unhappy with a compensation offer and had refused to move. He had locked himself in the house, he told the newspaper.

He said a group of people sent by the township government to demolish the house on Monday had taken away Zhang Jimin’s wife and beaten her, leaving her lying at the side of the road.

Zhang Jiyou said he received a phone call from Zhang Jimin, his cousin, early on Monday morning saying his wife was missing and asking for help.

She was later found severely injured and unconscious. She regained consciousness yesterday morning.

Zhang Jiyou told The Beijing News that when he arrived at the house on Monday it was already on fire and the courtyard walls had been pulled down.
