Dense fog plays havoc with roads, airports
HUNDREDS of flights were delayed or canceled while expressways were closed in Beijing yesterday as heavy fog enveloped the northern and eastern Chinese regions.
The foggy weather hit nine provinces and municipalities including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu yesterday morning, cutting visibilities to as low as 200 meters in Beijing and other areas.
The country's top meteorological authority issued a yellow alert at 6am, suggesting people in fog-affected areas cancel outdoor activities as the fog worsened the regions' air quality.
A total of 104 domestic and international flights at Beijing Capital International Airport were canceled with 121 departing flights delayed as of 6pm yesterday.
Eight flights to Beijing, including four international ones from Helsinki, Munich, Stockholm and London, were forced to land at Hohhot Airport in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the morning. They set off to Beijing again around 3pm when the fog partially dispersed.
Almost all the more than 50 flights between Shanghai and Beijing were delayed, while five flights were canceled.
The fog also forced the temporary closure of six expressways in Beijing.
Weather authorities in Hebei and Henan provinces also issued fog alerts in the morning. Seven highways were closed in Hebei while 14 highway toll stations stopped services temporarily in Shandong.
The foggy weather is expected to continue until Wednesday. The fog will bring visibilities down to 1,000 meters in most of the regions until an expected cold front arrives to sweep the area and disperse the fog in three days, the state weather center said.
